Frequently asked questions
Everything about subscriptions, delivery, pickup, allergens and billing.
Subscriptions
Can I change my delivery address?
Yes — update your address in Account settings by 6pm the day before. Changes after 6pm apply from the day after tomorrow.
How do I skip a day?
Open your account before 10am on the day, tap the delivery card, and hit "Skip this day". The tiffin credit stays on your account and rolls to next cycle.
Can I pause my subscription?
Yes — from your account, pause for a week, a fortnight, or a full month. Any tiffins remaining on your plan carry over to the next cycle.
How does the subscription work?
You choose a plan — 5, 10, or 20 tiffins a month — and your tiffin arrives on the chosen delivery days automatically. You can skip any day up to the 10am cut-off.
What's included in a Mumbai Dabbawala subscription?
Every plan includes your chosen thali (veg or non-veg), free delivery or pickup, and a reusable steel dabba that we collect and re-circulate on your next order. There's no separate delivery fee for either fulfillment method.
Can I pause or skip individual days?
Yes — from your account's Subscription page you can pause an entire plan or skip individual delivery days. Each plan includes a set number of free skips per billing cycle; extra skips beyond that quota are chargeable, and you'll always see your remaining quota before confirming.
Can I pause my subscription while travelling?
Yes — pause any active subscription from your account dashboard up to the daily cut-off time, and resume whenever you're back.
How do I change my plan or cancel?
You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your subscription any time from your account's Subscription page. Changes take effect from your next billing cycle — you won't lose access to a plan you've already paid for mid-cycle.
Delivery
What if I'm not there to receive the tiffin?
Add a drop-off note (e.g. "leave at reception") to your address. Our partner will follow it and text a photo of the drop.
Do you deliver on weekends?
Not currently. Perth delivery runs Monday to Friday only. Weekend delivery is on the 2026 roadmap subject to demand.
Which suburbs do you deliver to?
Perth CBD, Subiaco, Leederville, Northbridge, West Perth, and Mount Lawley. See the /pickup-locations page for the full map.
When will my tiffin arrive?
Between 11:15am and 12:45pm on delivery days, depending on your suburb. You'll get a text 10 minutes before drop-off.
What are your delivery windows?
Delivery windows depend on your suburb's delivery zone and are shown at checkout before you confirm your address. We deliver Monday to Friday for weekday plans; your exact daily window is confirmed in your delivery notifications.
What happens if I'm not home when my dabba arrives?
Let us know your delivery preferences (a safe drop location, building access notes, etc.) in your address details. If a delivery genuinely can't be completed, our driver will contact you using the number on your account before marking it as a failed delivery.
Is my suburb in a delivery zone?
Checkout checks your address against our real delivery zones automatically. If you're outside every zone today, you're offered pickup instead (if a nearby counter exists) or added to our waitlist for that suburb so we can notify you as zones expand.
Pickup
Where is the pickup point?
Unit 4, 82 Frobisher Street, Osborne Park. Enter from the rear car park; the pickup window is signed "Mumbai Dabbawala".
Can I pick up instead of delivery?
Yes — pickup from our Osborne Park kitchen is available between 11am and 1pm on weekdays. Pickup plans are ~$3/tiffin cheaper than delivery.
How does pickup work?
Choose Pickup at checkout and select one of our open pickup counters. You'll get a pickup code with your order — show it (or let staff scan it) at the counter to collect your thali. There's no delivery fee either way, and pickup plans can be paid at the counter instead of online.
Can I switch between delivery and pickup?
Yes — fulfillment type can be changed from your account's Subscription page. If you switch to pickup you'll be asked to choose one of our currently open pickup locations.
Allergens
Is the kitchen halal?
The non-veg thali is halal-certified (Halal Certification Authority Australia, ref 24-11-38). The veg rotation contains no meat, eggs, or alcohol.
Is the food vegetarian?
The default rotation is vegetarian. A separate non-veg option is available on select days — clearly marked with a red dot on the menu card.
Do you cater for nut allergies?
Yes — you can flag a nut allergy at signup and we'll skip any tiffin containing nuts, notify you the night before with the exact allergen present, and offer a refund credit.
How are allergens labeled?
Every day's menu on /menu shows all declared allergens for that thali (gluten, dairy, nuts, mustard, sesame, soybean, egg, celery, sulphites). We never hide an allergen.
How do you handle allergens?
You can flag your allergens once in Account Settings, and every day's thali is checked against your flagged list before it's delivered — you'll be warned in advance if a scheduled meal conflicts with something you've flagged. Every dish's allergen data follows the FSANZ Schedule 9 naming standard, not generic terms like 'nuts.'
What if I have an allergy that isn't in your list?
Our flagged-allergens list covers the FSANZ Schedule 9 declarable allergens (gluten, crustacean, mollusc, fish, egg, milk, peanut, soybean, sesame, tree nuts, lupin, sulphites). For anything outside that list, contact our kitchen directly before subscribing so we can confirm whether we can safely accommodate it.
Billing
Do you offer refunds?
If a tiffin is missed, damaged, or wrong, we refund it as a credit to your next cycle. Report via /account/feedback within 24 hours.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes — cancel from Account settings, effective from your next billing cycle. No cancellation fee, no penalty, no phone call required.
How does billing work?
You're charged at the start of each 4-week cycle for your chosen plan. Card on file, Stripe-secured, no auto-upsells.
Can I get a refund for a missed or cancelled delivery?
If a delivery genuinely fails on our end, the affected day is credited back as a free skip rather than charged — you'll see this reflected on your account's Subscription timeline and that cycle's invoice.
General
Is your food spicy?
Home-style Indian, not restaurant Indian. Medium heat by default; you can request "mild" or "extra spice" in Account preferences.
Are the tiffins reusable?
Yes — stainless steel, food-safe, washed nightly at the kitchen. We collect the empties same afternoon and return the same tiffin (or a clean one) the next delivery day.
Why is it called "dabbawala"?
"Dabba" is the Marathi/Hindi word for a tiffin container; "wala" means "the person who". Mumbai's dabbawala network has been running since 1890.
Do you deliver on public holidays?
Some public holidays affect kitchen operating days — any day our kitchen is closed is marked as closed on the menu calendar in advance, and no charge applies for a day we don't deliver.
Is Mumbai Dabbawala available outside Perth?
Not yet — we're launching in Perth, WA on 4 September 2026. Join our waitlist to be notified if we expand to other areas.
